Desire2Learn (D2L) Tutorials

As part of your New Student Orientation (NSO) experience, you will be required to complete content within Desire2Learn, or D2L, MSU’s course management system. Is this your first time using D2L? Do you want to make sure you are set up correctly?

The Collaborative Learning Center through the Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative on campus helped to put together three D2L tutorials that will assist you with getting started in D2L. Take a look at the following tutorials!

  1. Learning the Basics: This tutorial will give you an overview of D2L that includes where to find your courses and communities, where to find content within your courses and communities, an introduction to the assessment tab where you can see grades for assignments and quizzes, and an introduction to the communications tab where you can communicate within your D2L course or community.
  2. Your D2L Email Account: In this tutorial, Mustafa will show you how to forward your D2L email account to another email account, send emails through D2L, and manage subscription alerts.
  3. Assignments and Quizzes: In this tutorial, Madison will show you how to submit assignments and view quizzes within your D2L courses and communities.

Two-Factor Authentication

MSU has added an additional step to safeguard personal and institutional data by applying two-factor authentication for both students, faculty, and staff. Two-factor authentication pairs something an individual has (e.g., a security credential) with something they know (e.g., a password). You may have noticed this if you have logged into an MSU system.

If you have not set up your two-factor authentication yet, we recommend doing so! Follow the link below to get more information about two-factor authentication and instructions for setting up a credential.

Zoom

During your NSO experience, you may be invited to virtual synchronous sessions including webinars and orientation group events through Zoom. MSU students can download Zoom and use it for free!

To get started, check out the Zoom conferencing cloud website through MSU to get started downloading the software to a device. Make sure you have your MSU NetID and password. Note that all MSU meetings through Zoom require a password, which is usually a series of numbers.

Microsoft Teams

All new students will have access to Office 365, which is free! Included in this package is Microsoft Teams. Teams is the chat based workspace tool that allows you to manage all of your conversations, participate in audio and video calls, files, and tools in one workspace. Teams also integrates the other services within Office 365 like Microsoft SharePoint and OneDrive. Your professors may use Teams during the academic year.

To get started, login to your Spartan365 account with your MSU NetID and password. Office 365 is a free download for all MSU students! Click on the Teams tile, and a new tab will open with your Teams account. You can also download the Teams desktop app if you prefer. Alternatively, you can visit the Teams download page directly.

Netiquette: Preparing for Virtual Meetings

Throughout your NSO experience and during your first semester, you will be participating in virtual meetings. The Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative and Associated Students of MSU provide some great tips for online etiquette, also known as netiquette, which is the correct or acceptable way of communicating over the internet. Check out the video below to learn more about these netiquette tips so you are prepared for your virtual meetings.

Would you like more practice with D2L? MSU IT Services has created additional resources for students to use if they would like more information about and practice with D2L.

There is a D2L community that students can self-enroll and complete called “Students – Getting Started with D2L”. This community will give students practical application within a D2L community using the various D2L functions. Use the self-enroll link below to get started!

IT Services has also created a recording of a virtual webinar that dives into the D2L basics for students. Modeled after the Students Getting started with D2L Course, this webinar demonstrates how students can navigate D2L in order to access course material, communicate with other students and instructors, and complete assignments and assessments.
