MSU Math Placement Service

MSU Math Placement Service

Proctored vs. Unproctored

Waiving the university math requirement by proctored Mathematics Placement Service (MPS) Assessment is only applicable to specific majors (see list below). Students in these majors may opt to fulfill the math requirement by enrolling in math courses recommended by their advisor rather than waiving the university math requirement. To select that option, a student may take the MPS assessment unproctored.

If a student plans to pursue any of the majors below and would like to take the proctored math assessment to waive the math requirement, a score of 19 or higher must be earned on the proctored MPS Assessment.

How to take the proctored MPS Assessment?

To register to take the proctored MPS Assessment, please email Brian Chadwick at chadwic4@msu.edu and/or Ron Powers at powersr6@msu.edu.

Eligible majors

The following majors (listed by college) are eligible to waive the university math requirement with a score of 19 or higher on the proctored Mathematics Placement Service (MPS) Assessment. If your major is not listed below, please navigate to the unproctored MPS Assessment to complete.
